  CHAPTER ONE:

I sat alone on the flat rocky section of the tiny island where our spacecraft had landed just yesterday. It wasn't actually our spaceship, though. We had stolen it from the alien starship at the suggestion of Delilah, the super-thin black skinned beauty from another world. It turned out that we were mere passengers on that vessel instead. The whole thing had been planned to get us from one island, the manufactured simulation in the ship, to another island. The fact that this island was undeniably real was no consolation. Our lives were still not under our control.

Clear blue water lapped softly against the dark gray rocks below my feet, attempting to pacify my troubled mind. Fish of a variety of colors and shapes darted back and forth less than twenty feet away. Purple, pink, yellow and green. They resembled creatures from a screensaver more than what you would normally find active along the shore.

Pink kelp-like plants floated along the surface in some places, possibly still attached to the sea floor. There was plenty there for harvesting near the rocky sections. The loose pieces that had drifted ashore had proven to be edible. We assumed that the indigenous plant life was of high nutritional value, though only trial and error could confirm or disprove that.

The sun was bright but hazy, almost like it had been on the ship's fake island. This time, it appeared to be due to a translucent canopy in the atmosphere that filtered the sunlight. I had heard stories from Sunday school saying that Earth once had such a barrier before the great flood. Supposedly, the canopy moderated temperatures and light conditions. No searing heat, despite the brightness that was able to penetrate. No cold winters either.

The clouds on this planet were chunky looking, like the gases were clinging together instead of dissipating. Light green clouds passed quickly by overhead, as purple ones populated the horizon in a dazzling but otherworldly display.

Visibility was much better than yesterday in all directions. It took a while for our eyes to adjust to natural sunlight after being deprived of it for so long. There was not much to see but the ocean, though. Another island roughly the size of ours could be spotted to the southeast, and yet another to the west. Neither had any recognizable structures that we could identify. The tall trees there resembled the ones on our island. They were too far to swim to safely and did not appear to be worth it anyway.

Another land mass could be spotted much farther to the north. It was significantly wider with a steep rocky cliff facing our direction. No signs of the civilization there that we could make out at this distance.

This piece of land where the four of us spent the night was oblong in shape, a little longer running north and south versus east to west. I determined these directions based on the movement of the sun, or at least the brightest part of the sky. Pristine beaches bordered the sides of the island as rocky outcrops punctuated the ends.

It was only our second day here and I was already sick of the place. Inside the starship there were quests, activities and games to keep us occupied. And night life with certain enjoyable moments. Of course, we didn't know that we were in a ship at the time. Our minds were occupied with escape possibilities there and surviving the sports and fitness challenges that were forced onto us. Here there was nothing like that. The relaxing environment was a nice change at first. Then reality set in that we might be confined to this boring place forever.

Drexel and Trixie were each killed during our escape aboard the alien starship. I believed that to be real. The graphic scene of their death dealing injuries were too convincing. Ronnie and Zach had been left behind in our haste when we found the tiny door that led us into a maze of tunnels and rooms. We initially regretted leaving without Zach since he had so much more experience with alien instrumentation inside the hologram game. It wasn't until after we were well on our way here that I realized it wouldn't have mattered. The small shuttle craft was programmed to bring us here regardless. We had no control over it.

We were essentially toys to this alien race. Pawns to be manipulated and sacrificed at their whims. Entertainment. That was all we were to them. Watching us make life choices or die gruesomely, we existed only for their amusement. We were not even classified as equals. According to their law they owned us. As survivors of a race that had been virtually obliterated, we had no rights. We didn't even survive the genocide by our own merit. We were in preservation sleep chambers for years. We unknowingly slept through the extinction of the human race.

Everything to this point led me to believe that we were still being watched. Where the cameras would be, I had no idea. Maybe inside the house? And on the exterior walls? Their technology was so advanced, it was quite possible that they had video capture devices in plain view, and I wouldn't even know it. The way that they watched us at the last place, and sent recordings of us across the galaxy, I firmly believed that we were still on camera. But what difference did that make? Not much.

I figured that we were being given some time to adjust, before they throw the next shit storm at us. It sounded terrible, but I clung to that perceived reality just the same. The alternative could possibly be much worse. Boring life with no means of escape.

It wasn't all that bad actually, considering the three attractive women that had been sentenced to this planet with me. In their presence I could crawl out of this quicksand of self-pity. It was only when I was alone that my soul began to suffocate. Imprisonment along with knowing that everything and everyone from your life before was long gone had that effect. Life without meaning was extremely depressing.

Movement to my right caught my attention. It was the familiar slim form of Nancy approaching from the house. What a unique woman that she turned out to be. If we had met on Earth it was unlikely that we would even had connected for a meaningful conversation, let alone a sexual experience. Now my bond with her was the strongest, partly because she was there when I woke up from the long sleep. Caring and stable. We became friends quickly like two castaways separated from the rest of the world. Then we became more than friends. To her the sex was casual at first, I thought. I wanted it to be for me as well, but there was something about her that didn't
want me to let her go. That was why I fought for her survival so fiercely during the games, and throughout our escape.

Nancy was slender but toned. Not muscular despite those few days of vigorous workouts to help her be more competitive in the arena. Approximately five foot four, maybe a hundred and thirty pounds. Long, straight brown hair with a touch of auburn. An attractive round face with large brown eyes as the only bold feature. Light tan skin and a subtle confidence in her walk like she should be wearing a business suit instead of the alien garb provided. However, I liked her much better in what she currently had on.

In our simulated prison of an island where we competed against other teams, color coded uniforms were provided as our clothing. Not here though. The only garments we found in our new home by way of the survival kits were sections of cloth to wear as wraps, and skimpy slip on garments. Very thin silky material, most of which were not sheer. You could cover your privates with them easily enough, and they were quite comfortable in this climate, but somehow awkward for me due to how foreign they felt against my skin. I was never one for silk pajamas, let alone day clothes.

I opted to keep on the shorts that I arrived in for at least another day. The exotic material felt too much like a girl’s panties around my genitals. Not that I've ever worn any of those before. They just made me feel much less manly.

Nancy and the others were eager to wear something new. My approaching friend was currently wearing a light blue wrap looped around the back of her neck and crisscrossed on her chest to cover her small, firm breasts. The ends disappeared below the dark blue tube of material that she had fashioned as a miniskirt. She looked damn good in the new garb. That was perhaps the only good new develop since our arrival.

I got the impression that she was coming to me with a message. Was dinner ready? Did one of the other girls tell her a funny joke that she wanted to share with me? Or, maybe she was horny. There weren't a lot of options in our new circumstances. When she was close enough, she opened her mouth to reveal her intent, but was unable to speak before something gray dropped from the sky with a loud whistle. It impacted the grassy section of ground towards the right of our new house with a thump.

Sandy dirt flew into the air in all directions causing Nancy to dive toward me on the ground. Instead of seeking cover for myself, I lurched forward to place me between her and the unknown object. I shielded my eyes with my hand as air born debris eventually settled on the land and gave me a clearer view.

A gray sphere about four feet in diameter rested nearly half submerged into the ground. It was smooth metal, obviously not a random meteorite. Heat from atmospheric entry steamed off as it began to cool. I guessed at its possible purpose. Did it hold food or survival items? Our refrigerator was empty on our arrival. Though fish were abundant, we had no means of catching them at present. Or, maybe it contained some sort of game that our owners wanted us to play. It had to have been sent by them, but what could it be?

My mind went back to the board game that had appeared at our old place. Hologram-like images of humans and aliens battled each other in a turn-based game like sci-fi chess. During our descent here in the shuttle I considered it a possibility that the activity was intended to prepare us for the next level of the game that imprisoned us. I half expected to find three alien races to fight against when the shuttle door opened.

Less than a minute later I no longer had to wonder what was in the sphere. The curved top opened up like a camera shutter with a hiss. I assumed the sound came from our planetary air entering the vacuum inside the ball. Or it was possibly hot air escaping. It was not large enough in my opinion to maintain air pressure during its descent and I was guessing it to have been sent from orbit above the planet's atmosphere. A long spidery leg of shiny construction then exited the opening to gain footing on the outside of the sphere. Then another, and another, until the entire mechanical creature came into view.

A flat circular body roughly a foot in diameter sprung six long limbs, none of which ended with any noticeable appendage. It slowly rotated around three hundred and sixty degrees, presumably taking in its environment. I optimistically tried to determine the intent of this robot, hopeful that it was here to catch fish for us. But there was nothing friendly about its appearance.

The thing might have spotted me. What may have been its face locked onto my position. As it gradually crept down the exterior of the ball another three robotic spiders exited and headed in the other directions.

"Nancy, get up!" I told my sweet friend that was still belly down in the sand. She was in the process of rising to a push up stance as she peered curiously at the new arrival, fear and confusion in her eyes.

"What is it, Joah?" she asked in a loud whisper.

"Nothing good," I told her. I had never seen anything like these in real life or the movies that turned out to be welcomed guests. I knew the chances of it being a robotic vacuum or housekeeper was slim to none. "Get in the house with Lin and Shira. Grab the guns."

The only weapons that we managed to bring with us on the shuttle were my pulse rifle and Lin's laser pistol. They were instrumental in our escape from the starship. We kept them resting just inside the building as we waited for trouble to arrive. Well, it's here.

Nancy scrambled to her feet and headed toward the house. The sand was firm where she had fallen, close to the rocky shuttle landing spot. It was loose footing though where the ball had dropped. The spider that was originally headed toward me had trouble getting a good grip as it shifted its focus toward the fleeing woman. I waved my arms to regain its attention and was promptly rewarded with a bright white ball of energy emitted from the robot's mouth. It struck me in the left forearm before I could dodge it and stung like hell.

"Shit!" I yelled, then followed along Nancy's path. The spider chased after us but struggled to match pace like it was swimming through the sand. The one facing the north, the direction of the east side of the building, joined in the pursuit. The other two continued in their programmed directions unaware of us.

Lin emerged from the building with the laser pistol in hand. The most gorgeous of my roommates, she also had also opted for the new clothing. The purple top was worn like Nancy's, but the bottom piece wrapped around her legs and waist to form something like a bikini bottom. The fluffy nature of the selected fabric made it look more like a sexy pink diaper to me. Shine up those shapely legs and put her in high heels, she could work a chorus line in Vegas.

Of Asian descent, Lin was just a hair shorter than the other woman, with a petite but athletic body. Straight black hair and dark eyes, with very tan skin like a Polynesian. Bold facial features made her pageant worthy, especially when she smiled. She was not currently smiling, though. I would best describe her facial expression as a grimace. She also closed one eye as she squeezed the trigger three times while walking forward. All three shots missed but burned the sand close to the nasty intruder.

Nancy ran right past her to get inside. Unfortunately, there was no door on the building to block intrusion. A gaping ten-foot wide entrance would easily allow in any attacker. Hiding inside was not really an option.

"Take it," Lin yelled to me as I converged on her position, handing me her weapon instead of continuing to fire. My preference would have been to retrieve the pulse rifle from inside so we could both be armed. But there was no time to argue or communicate that information at the moment. I took the pistol from her and swiveled to snap off a quick shot.

The robotic insect was within twenty feet of me then, and my aim was true despite my hasty movements. A hole bored through the circular exterior and disabled it immediately, its body collapsing to the ground as smoke bellowed from the opening. The second critter was rushing toward us at a faster pace as its path had found firmer ground in the grass. It was even closer when it fired another energy ball. I ducked to avoid it as I squeezed the trigger. It took two blasts to take that one down. The spider's missed shot of white energy continued through the air past the building unaffected by gravity
. Missing all the tall trees its power faded as it left our vicinity.

Nancy then came running out with the oversized rifle. Carrying it in a manner that clearly told me that she had no intention of firing it herself, she thrust it at me. I handed the pistol back to Lin and accepted the bulkier weapon.

"Where did the other two go?" I asked.

"There are two more of those things?" Lin asked in shock. We had certainly faced worst just the day before. But this serene location had a way of lulling you into a false sense of security. A robotic attack here was the last thing that we expected.

"Joah," Nancy said from behind me as I visually searched the island for the other spiders while motionless. They weren’t very large so spotting them took patience. "You are hurt."

I looked at my left forearm for the first time to inspect the injury. The skin was bright cherry red, but it appeared to be merely a flesh wound about three inches in diameter. There was no bleeding or exposed muscle. These things were not sent to kill us evidently. At least that particular type of ammunition was unable to do so unless maybe if it hit us in the face.

The blast had narrowly missed the buttons that had been embedded into my arm while we were in sleep mode aboard the ship. The red disc closest to my wrist was for pain medication. I jabbed it quickly before the pain began to set in but could not tell whether or not it was still working.
